On 23rd October, István Stumpf was unanimously elected as the new president of the Confrérie de Tokaj, replacing István Szepsy who retains the title 'honorary president' of the association. The change was necessary because of István Szepsy's gradually withdrawing from public life, mostly due to his age and recent health problems. The members present clinked glasses of 1956 Tokaji Aszú wine after the vote.
Born in the town of Sárospatak, Tokaj region, István Stumpf is a lawyer and teacher of law and has been actively engaged in Hungary's civic and political life in the past three decades. He even headed the Prime Minister's Office and was Deputy Prime Minister between 1998 and 2002, and was a member of the Constitutional Court of Hungary from 2010 to 2019.
The Confrérie de Tokaj membership includes producers, wine professionals and wine lovers committed to promoting the Tokaj Wine Region as the world's first demarcated wine region since 1737 and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2002.
