The International Wine Challenge results, including Trophies, were announced today, revealing Royal Tokaji's 6 puttonyos Aszú of 2016 as a 96-point winner of the Hungarian Sweet Trophy, as well as the IWC Champion Sweet, the latter being one of only six Champion Wine Awards in the competition. Tokaj's total of 22 awards, which came from a mere seven producers, were almost equally distributed between sweet and dry wines, however, it was the sweet ones that dominated the top of the scoreboard, including another three gold medalists from Patricius and Royal Tokaji.

While there does normally occur a difference of four to five points between the results of the same wine at different international competitions, it was a striking discrepancy that Barta's Aszú 2016, which had scored 97 points at this year's DWWA, was rated below 90 by the IWC. This truly outstanding wine seems to have been sadly misjudged, or just completely failed to appeal to the taste of the IWC tasting panel.
